Carwell died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999. Born in Natchez, was a son of the late Annie Lou Carwell of Clyde, MS. A veteran of World War II, he retired from the U.S. Army in 1965 and from Civil Service at the Moncrief Army Hospital at Fort Jackson in 1986.

He was a longtime member of Woodfield Park Baptist Church and a member of Dentsville Masonic Lodge 398. Surviving are his wife, Annemarie Irmgard Carwell of Columbia; sons, James Leon John Lewis, Jesse Lamar; daughters, Julie Davis-Platt, Jean Hanvey, Janet Daniels-Forktus, all of Columbia; brother, Robert Lewis Altman of sister, Wilton Sylvest of 13 grandchildren; two great-grand-children. He was predeceased by his daughter, Margaret Jane Carwell. 26, 1999. Born January 28, 1915 in Florence, he was a son of Charles and Lena Bannett Insel. He graduated from McClenaghan High School and The Citadel. He worked for a short time at S.C. National Bank of Life of Georgia before entering the U.S.

Army. After serving in World War II and the Korean War, he returned to Florence, where he worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance for 40 years until he retired as a consultant in 1980. He was a member of the Beth Israel Congregation, where he served as president from 1968 to 1970, and managed the Jewish Cemetery for 36 years. He was a 60 year member of the Masonic Lodge and a member of the Golden Kiwanis Club. Surviving are his wife, Jewell Odom Whittington Insel of the home; son, Curtis C.

He was also retired from the Bureau of the Budget, Dept. of Finance for The City of Baltimore. Since moving to Mt. Pleasant, he has been an active member of the First Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant and the East Cooper Meals on Wheels.
