Game Recap: Softball | | Steve Sheridan, Athletic Communications Director
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College softball team extended its winning streak to three games with a Sunday sweep of Skidmore College in Liberty League action at Alexander Field. The Garnet Chargers took game one by a 7-2 score and finished off the sweep with a 9-4 game-two victory.
Junior Nahnny Sobetzko led the Union attack with four hits, two runs scored and one run batted in. Sophom*ore Ellie Wintringer homered and drove in three runs on the day, while junior Melody Kappel and first-year Sam Rose both had three hits as well.
Game One: Union 7, Skidmore 2
Union continued their team offensive approach that saw seven starters pick up hits in Saturday's win against Rensselaer with eight batters tallying Union's nine hits in the game one victory Sunday morning. Wintringer was the lone Garnet Charger with two hits, both of the extra-base variety, also leading the way with three runs batted in and was one of six to score a run.
Union's offense was on from the start, as the Garnet Chargers put up three runs in the home half of the first to take an early lead. Junior Riley Callahan got things started with a leadoff single before Sobetzko moved her to second on a sacrifice bunt, but Wintringer decided that was not needed as she sent a two-run blast over the left-centerfield fence to make it 2-0.
Junior Tatum Perkins kept things going with a walk before going to second on sophom*ore Haley Gibbons' groundout, and came around to score on a single up the middle from Rose to make the lead three at the end of the first.
Skidmore got one back in the top of the second, but gave it back in the home half as Kappel scored from second on an error after moving to second on a wild pitch from her one-out walk. Perkins continued her hot weekend, which saw her pick up a team-high two hits in Saturday's game two victory over #18 Rensselaer, with a leadoff home run in the third to push the lead to four. Sophom*ore Elizabeth Werner extended the lead to five in the fifth with her RBI single that scored Gibbons before back-to-back doubles from Sobetzko and Wintringer in the sixth made it 7-1.
Skidmore attempted a comeback in the seventh, getting one run back off a one-out double, but junior Autumn Duff proceeded to get a strikeout and groundout to close the door.
In the circle, Duff went the distance for her second complete game of the year. The Burnt Hills native allowed eight hits, two runs and two walks while striking out three in her strongest performance of the season.
Game Two: Union 9, Skidmore 4
The offensive attack continued in game two, pounding out a season-best 14 hits and matching a season high with nine runs. Sobetzko went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored and three others had multiple hits, including a 2-for-3 effort with two RBIs from first-year Sophia Gomes.
The Garnet Chargers again started the game strong, plating four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Sobetzko started the rally with a one-out double and the home team took advantage of three Skidmore errors to get on the scoreboard, with Rose doubling home one run and Gomes adding an RBI single in the inning.
Union added one run in the second on a Perkins RBI single and, after the Thoroughbreds scored twice in the top of the third, responded with three in the bottom half to take an 8-2 lead. A Rose RBI groundout, a Callahan sacrifice fly and a Sobetzko RBI single helped to bump the lead to six after three frames. The home team added one more in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a run-scoring single by first-year Maddy Ewald.
Kappel (2-7) picked up her second victory of the season by allowing four unearned runs on eight hits and a career-high eight strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Union will continue its homestand on Wednesday with a non-conference doubleheader against Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts beginning at 3 p.m. at Alexander Field.
